San Francisco Gay Bars Halt AI Face Scanning Amid Privacy Concerns
Gay bars in San Francisco, including Badlands and Toad Hall, have decided to stop using AI-assisted face scanning technology following privacy concerns raised by the community. The technology, provided by Patronscan, was initially implemented to prevent underage drinking and identify individuals with a history of causing disturbances. However, the use of this technology sparked controversy, particularly among LGBTQ+ patrons who view these establishments as safe spaces. The decision to pause the use of Patronscan was announced by Brian Aranda, director of operations at the bars, who stated that manual ID checks would continue during the review of security practices. The Mix, another bar using the technology, has not yet announced any changes. Privacy advocates have long criticized the use of such surveillance technology, especially in venues catering to LGBTQ+ customers, due to concerns about data misuse and potential access by government entities.
