Montgomery County Committee Advances Bill to Raise Street Takeover Fines to $5,000
A Montgomery County Council committee has advanced a bill that proposes to increase fines for illegal street takeovers to as much as $5,000. The Public Safety Committee approved an amendment on Tuesday, raising the maximum proposed fine from $1,000 to $5,000, before sending Bill 27-26 to the full County Council for consideration. The proposed legislation aims to establish county penalties for individuals who organize, promote, or participate in illegal street racing, stunt driving, and street takeovers. Additionally, the bill would prohibit individuals from remaining at such events after police issue a lawful order to disperse. Under this proposal, violations could be charged as misdemeanors, and county police would be authorized to seize, tow, and store vehicles involved in these activities. A vote by the full County Council on Bill 27-26 has not yet been scheduled.
