New York High School Senior Suspended Over Coffee, Challenges Policy Adoption Process
Julie Kaputa, a senior at Beaver River Central School in Castorland, NY, was suspended for bringing a cup of coffee to class, an act that allegedly violated a newly adopted school policy on outside food and drinks. The incident occurred on September 3, her first day of her senior year, when a teacher confronted her and offered her the choice to dump the coffee, consume it immediately, or go to the office. Kaputa received an in-school suspension (ISS) for refusing to comply. Her mother, Mary Anne Kaputa, questioned the legality of the policy's adoption, stating that there was no public hearing on the matter during the August school board meeting, which is a required step for substantial changes to the code of conduct.
