Kansas City Fire Department Responds to 24 Fires at Olive Park Village in Eight Months, City Incurs Significant Costs
The Kansas City Fire Department (KCFD) has responded to 24 fires at Olive Park Village since the beginning of the year, a situation that has frustrated both residents and firefighters. The repeated incidents have led to significant costs for the city, with over $46,000 spent on fencing and approximately $38,000 on demolition costs, and an additional $92,000 anticipated for further demolition work. The property owner, Millennia, has not reimbursed the city for these expenses. Neighbors, like Darryl McFadden, who has lived in the area for 25 years, express concern over the property's deteriorating condition and its negative impact on neighborhood value. Shanae Johnson, a former resident, described the once-great community as now an 'eyesore' and an 'embarrassment.' Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins of the KCFD highlighted the frustration and danger for firefighters, as well as the financial strain on the department due to repeated calls and wear and tear on equipment.
