Syria and Russia Agree to Transform Military Bases into Joint Training Centers
Syria and Russia have reached an agreement to reorganize the use of two strategic Mediterranean bases, Hmeimim air base and Tartus naval base. These bases, previously used as Russian military outposts, will now be transformed into joint training and qualification centers. The Syrian Foreign Ministry announced that Syria will assume control of the Hmeimim air base and the commercial berth at Tartus port, integrating them into the country's civilian administration. This agreement marks a significant shift in Syrian-Russian relations, following the overthrow of former President Bashar al-Assad. Russia, which had been a key ally of Assad, did not interfere during the insurgency that led to his ouster but provided asylum to him and his family. The new Syrian leadership under President Ahmad al-Sharaa has maintained strong ties with Moscow, with the bases being a focal point of discussions.
