Illinois Lawmakers Discuss Delays in Chicago Bears Stadium Deal, Citing Complexities and Historical Precedents
Illinois lawmakers are discussing the prolonged process of securing a stadium deal for the Chicago Bears. Rep. Kam Buckner appeared on Robin Johnson's Quad Cities public radio show, noting that while the process feels lengthy, it has only been about three and a half years since the Bears purchased Arlington Racetrack. He compared this timeline to other NFL stadium deals, such as the Minnesota Vikings' U.S. Bank Stadium, which took approximately six years and involved multiple location changes, and the Las Vegas Raiders' Allegiant Stadium, which also took about six and a half years, even with widespread agreement. Sen. Bill Cunningham (D-Chicago), the chief sponsor of the Senate’s Bears bill, highlighted two primary reasons for the delay: the lack of unified support from the Chicago mayor and the Illinois governor, and the challenge of moving a stadium within the state, which often pits Illinois municipalities against each other.
