MTA Develops OMNY System to Display Balances and Transfers Amid Rider Concerns
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is working on enhancing its OMNY tap-and-pay system to display balances and transfers for riders. This development comes after the full transition from the MetroCard system, which previously allowed riders to see their balances and transfers at turnstiles. MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber announced the ongoing software development during a recent board meeting, addressing concerns from riders who miss the real-time information previously available. Currently, users can only view their balance and trip history online by linking their OMNY account to a payment method. The company behind OMNY, Cubic Transportation, has faced criticism for technical issues in New York and other cities. The MTA has not provided a timeline for when these software updates will be implemented.
