Fermented Foods May Enhance Gut Microbiome Diversity and Reduce Inflammation, Study Suggests
Fermented foods, such as yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, miso, tempeh, and kombucha, are created through the transformation of sugars by bacteria or yeasts. This process often results in live microbes, distinct tangy flavors, and new nutrients. Early research indicates that regular consumption of a variety of these foods could support a more diverse gut microbiome. A 2021 randomized trial published in the journal Cell involved 36 healthy adults over ten weeks. Participants were assigned to either a high-fiber diet or a high-fermented-food diet, with the latter group consuming up to six servings daily of items like yogurt, kefir, kimchi, fermented vegetables, and kombucha.
