Kettering University Receives NSF Award for Advanced Battery Degradation Detection Research
Kettering University has been granted a $50,000 National Science Foundation (NSF) award to further research into a novel method for detecting battery degradation and potential failures. The project, led by Dr. Foroogh Rouhollahi, Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering, focuses on using laser-based non-contact measurements to monitor battery health. This approach investigates changes in a battery's physical and mechanical responses, such as resonance behavior and ultrasonic characteristics, to gain insights into its state of health, degradation, and developing defects. The long-term objective is to identify problems earlier, preventing serious or catastrophic battery failures, which could enhance safety and reliability while reducing costs for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and suppliers by minimizing failures, warranty claims, recalls, downtime, and unnecessary battery replacements.
