School Boards Integrate Student Members, Highlighting Challenges in Power Sharing
In recent years, there has been a growing trend of including student members on school boards across the United States. This initiative aims to involve young people in governance and decision-making processes that directly affect their education. However, the integration of student members has not been without challenges. In Washington County, Tennessee, a student board member faced inappropriate behavior from an adult board member, highlighting the difficulties in power dynamics. Despite these challenges, more than 33 states have laws allowing student members on school boards, with over 1,500 students currently serving in various capacities. The inclusion of students is seen as a step towards treating young people as active participants in their governance rather than passive subjects.
