Rural Electric Cooperatives Face Challenges Amid Rising Demand and Policy Changes
Rural electric cooperatives in the U.S. are navigating a new era of load growth, rising costs, and policy pressure. Jim Matheson, CEO of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA), highlighted the challenges faced by co-ops due to surging data center demand and supply chain pressures. Co-ops, which serve 42 million people across 54% of the nation's land mass, operate on a not-for-profit model focused on consumer affordability. The demand increase is driven by factors such as heat pump adoption, electric vehicles, and AI-driven data centers. Matheson emphasized the need for co-ops to have flexibility in choosing energy sources and advocated for policy reforms to support infrastructure development.
