UNESCO Enhances Protection of Odesa Archaeological Museum Amid Ongoing Threats
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has intensified its efforts to protect the Odesa Archaeological Museum in Ukraine, which suffered damage in July 2023 due to shockwaves from nearby shelling. The museum, a 19th-century building, experienced cracked walls and a collapsed ceiling. UNESCO's initiative includes preventive conservation, reorganization of storage, digitization, and documentation to prepare for emergencies. Museum staff, students, and international experts have been trained in collection care and emergency response. New specialized equipment has been installed to enhance the security of over 160,000 museum items. This project has already yielded significant results, including the reorganization of nearly 7,000 objects and the scanning of over 3,400 archival documents.
