President Trump's Administration Sued by US States Over Election Fund Conditions
A coalition of 25 states, led by Rhode Island, California, Illinois, and New Jersey, has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration. The lawsuit challenges the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) decision to condition disaster-related funds on the adoption of specific election administration practices. The DHS announced that it would withhold 20% of Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grant awards unless states implement measures such as using hand-marked paper ballots and conducting manual audits of at least 5% of ballots. The states argue that these conditions exceed federal authority, as the U.S. Constitution assigns states the responsibility of administering federal elections.
