Rheinmetall Unveils GMF 140 Frigate Targeting North American Naval Programs
On August 3, 2026, Rheinmetall, a German defense company, unveiled the GMF 140, a guided missile frigate designed for multi-domain naval operations. The frigate features a 140-meter hull and a displacement of over 6,000 tonnes. It integrates an Aegis-centered combat architecture with 64 Strike-Length vertical launch cells, enabling capabilities in area air defense, ballistic missile defense, anti-submarine warfare, and land-attack operations. The GMF 140 is developed to meet the needs of upcoming North American naval procurement programs, with plans to expand sales to NATO and allied partner fleets. The frigate is equipped with modular radar configurations, sonar systems, a 5-inch main gun, laser defensive systems, and options for Lockheed Martin CMS330 integration. It aims to maximize missile density per tonne for Western naval forces.
