Discovery of Roman Shipwreck Off Sicily Reveals Ancient Amphorae Cargo
Italian divers have uncovered a 2,100-year-old Roman shipwreck off the coast of Sicily, laden with hundreds of ancient clay jars known as amphorae. These jars, likely used for transporting wine, were found three miles off the coast of Mazara del Vallo. The discovery was made by divers from the cultural heritage protection arm of Palermo's police, following a tip-off from fishermen. The ship, believed to date back to between the 2nd and 1st centuries BC, was located approximately 150 feet underwater. Italy's Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli has hailed the find as one of the most significant underwater archaeological discoveries in recent years.
