Heat Waves and Data Centers Strain U.S. Power Grids

According to GovTech, regional transmission operators (RTOs) like PJM Interconnection LLC, which serves 67 million people from Chicago to Washington, D.C., have issued emergency alerts as power demand reached unprecedented levels. On July 2, PJM recorded a peak demand of 168 gigawatts, surpassing a two-decade-old record. The U.S. Climate Prediction Center forecasts another heat wave building across the western and central U.S., with temperatures expected to reach 105°F (40.5°C) in Texas and other areas. The combination of high temperatures, increased humidity, and aging infrastructure is exacerbating the situation, with some grids struggling to maintain reliability.
