Swarthmore College Offers Free Tuition for Families Earning Under $200K, Expanding Access to Higher Education
Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania has announced a new financial aid initiative that will provide free tuition to students from families earning less than $200,000 annually. This program, set to begin in the fall of 2027, is part of the college's commitment to making higher education more accessible. According to Swarthmore's president, Valerie Smith, the initiative aims to ensure that financial circumstances do not hinder students from accessing a transformative liberal arts education. Currently, 55% of Swarthmore students receive financial aid, and the college already meets 100% of the determined financial need for all students. The new tuition guarantee is part of a growing trend among selective private institutions with substantial endowments, although some public universities have also adopted similar measures.
