Rep. Mark Takano Criticizes Trump Administration's Rule Limiting Transgender Youth Care on Medicaid and CHIP
Rep. Mark Takano, Chair of the Congressional Equality Caucus, has publicly condemned a new rule issued by the Trump Administration that restricts Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) from covering medically necessary care for transgender youth. The rule, finalized on August 11, prohibits federal funding for healthcare services such as puberty blockers and hormone therapy for transgender individuals under 18 through Medicaid, and under 19 through CHIP. Takano argues that healthcare decisions should be made between patients, their families, and healthcare providers, rather than being dictated by politicians. He views this rule as part of a broader effort by the administration to undermine access to essential healthcare for vulnerable groups, particularly young transgender individuals.
