New Zealand Ministry of Defence Advances Research on Emerging Technologies to Enhance Military Capabilities
The New Zealand Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) are intensifying their research and development efforts in emerging and disruptive technologies. This initiative focuses on artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), human-machine teaming (HMT), space-based technologies, and autonomous systems. The goal is to enhance combat capabilities and improve intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) effectiveness. Anton Youngman, the MoD's deputy secretary of strategy and assessment, highlighted the strategic drivers and policy frameworks guiding these initiatives. The convergence of technologies such as automation, AI, ML, robotics, data analytics, and the Internet of Things (IoT) is transforming societal and economic operations, as well as the military domain. This transformation is reshaping how defense forces organize and arm themselves, addressing evolving security threats.
