New Orleans Police Deny Wrongdoing After Recruit Detained by ICE Amid Immigration Crackdown
The New Orleans Police Department is under scrutiny following the detention of one of its recruits, Larry Temah, by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Temah, a Cameroonian national, was arrested after ICE accused the city of violating federal immigration laws. He was in the police academy and months away from graduation when detained. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) claims Temah had a final order of removal due to a denied permanent residency application, citing fraud. However, the New Orleans Police Department asserts that it verified Temah's employment eligibility through a DHS system and was unaware of ICE's intent to detain him until his arrest. The incident follows Operation Catahoula Crunch, a federal immigration crackdown in New Orleans, which has been paused as agents were redirected to Minneapolis.
