Taiwan Plans $850 Million Ammunition Replenishment Program to Boost Defense Capabilities
Taiwan's military is planning a significant investment of over NT$27 billion, approximately $850 million, to substantially increase its stockpiles of critical ammunition. This emergency replenishment program, designed to run for six years from 2026 through 2031, aims to raise combat-ready reserves from the current 30-day supply to a 120-day supply. The initiative, which still requires approval from lawmakers, is a direct response to the heightened geopolitical tensions and the need to prepare for potential military blockades. Lieutenant General Huang Wen-chi, director of strategic planning at Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense, indicated that increased training and exercises have also accelerated ammunition consumption, necessitating a faster replenishment rate.
