DOJ Charges 11 in Major Green Card Fraud Scheme Involving Sham Marriages
The Department of Justice has charged nearly a dozen individuals in a scheme to help Chinese nationals fraudulently obtain green cards through sham marriages with U.S. citizens. The operation, described as a multibillion-dollar industry, involved arranging fake weddings and staging family photos to make the marriages appear legitimate. U.S. citizens were paid up to $30,000 to participate, while immigrants were charged up to $100,000 per green card. The scheme, orchestrated from New York, is one of the largest marriage fraud prosecutions in U.S. history.
