Indian Student's OPT Revocation Highlights Risks of Non-Legit Employers in the U.S.
An Indian student in the U.S. has shared a cautionary tale about the risks of working with non-legitimate employers, leading to the revocation of their Optional Practical Training (OPT) status. The student, who remained anonymous, posted in a job group for OPT and CPT students, explaining that their STEM OPT was revoked after the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) audited the company they were associated with. The company, which was based in India, only had a mailing address in the U.S. and no physical presence. As a result, the student's Employment Authorization Document (EAD) was revoked, and they were asked to leave the U.S. within 30 days. This incident underscores the importance of ensuring that employers have a legitimate and physical presence in the U.S. to avoid jeopardizing one's immigration status.
