USC Study Reveals Gut-Brain Connection in Memory Formation
Recent research led by Scott Kanoski, a professor of biological sciences at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, has uncovered a significant role of the gut in memory formation. The study, published in Nature Communications, highlights the vagus nerve as a crucial communication pathway between the digestive system and the brain. This nerve, already known for regulating digestion and hunger, is now shown to influence memory by transmitting signals from the gut to the hippocampus, a brain region essential for learning and memory. The research demonstrated that when rats consumed nutritious foods, there was an increase in acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that supports memory formation. However, when the vagus nerve communication was disrupted, this increase disappeared, and the rats performed poorly on memory tests.
