U.S. Modernizes Missile-Tracking Fleet with New Vessel Contract, Supported by Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon
The U.S. is moving forward with the modernization of its missile-tracking fleet through a new vessel contract. TOTE Services will manage the construction of the new vessel, named Golden Defender, with shipbuilding work to be undertaken by Hanwha Philly Shipyard. The Golden Defender is scheduled for delivery in 2030. This initiative aims to replace aging missile range instrumentation vessels, specifically the Pacific Tracker and Pacific Collector, which have been in service since 1965 and 1970, respectively, and are nearing the end of their operational lives. These specialized ships are crucial for supporting missile tests, collecting tracking data, and enhancing national defense capabilities. U.S. Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon (PA-05) has expressed strong support for the project, highlighting its role in creating skilled union jobs and investing in the regional economy.
