Northern Youths in Lagos Transition from Okada Riding to Farming for Sustainable Livelihoods
In Lagos, Nigeria, a significant shift is occurring as many northern youths abandon traditional jobs such as commercial motorcycle riding, known locally as 'okada', in favor of farming. This transition is particularly evident in the Magboro area, where young men from northern states like Borno, Kebbi, and Katsina are now engaging in mechanized rice farming. The change is driven by the desire for more stable and rewarding livelihoods, as previous jobs in factories or as okada riders offered little financial security. The farming initiative, supported by local leaders and community efforts, has grown significantly, attracting individuals from various professions who now see agriculture as a viable business opportunity.
