Ghana Urged to Adopt Decisive Leadership Against Sahel Threat, Engage AES
Ghana is being urged to take decisive action and leadership in countering the growing threat from the Sahel region, which is characterized by jihadist insurgencies and instability. The threat, previously perceived as distant, is now several hundred kilometers to Ghana's south, with militant groups advancing towards the Atlantic coastline. While Ghana has implemented initiatives like the Accra Initiative and the BORDER Project, and engaged in communication with the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) governments (Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger), these efforts are deemed insufficient. The call for decisive action includes urgent intervention in managing counter-terrorism finance, addressing governance gaps at Ghana's northern borders, and fostering genuine collaborative intelligence exchanges with AES juntas. The current administration's communication with Bamako, Ouagadougou, and Niamey is seen as a positive step, but it needs to translate into actionable agreements rather than mere diplomatic performance.
