Japan Issues Megaquake Advisory Following 7.5 Magnitude Earthquake, Raises Concerns of Larger Quake
Japan has issued a megaquake advisory after a 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck off the eastern coast of Aomori, the northernmost prefecture of Japan's main island of Honshu. The earthquake resulted in 34 injuries and caused minor damage to roads and buildings. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has warned of the potential for a subsequent, larger earthquake, possibly reaching a magnitude of 8 or more, within the next week. This advisory is not a prediction but serves as a precautionary measure, urging residents, especially those in coastal areas, to be prepared for a possible evacuation. The advisory comes in the wake of the 2011 disaster, which was triggered by a similar sequence of seismic events and resulted in significant loss of life and damage, including the Fukushima nuclear plant disaster.
