LUNGevity Foundation Highlights Patient Perspectives on Liquid Biopsy in Precision Oncology for Lung Cancer
Nikki Martin, Senior Director of Precision Medicine Initiatives at the LUNGevity Foundation, presented a webinar focusing on patient-centered perspectives regarding liquid biopsy within precision oncology for lung cancer. The presentation delved into various aspects, including patients' understanding of biomarker testing, their access to liquid biopsy technologies, communication challenges, and the role of liquid biopsy in guiding treatment selection and access to clinical trials. Key findings indicate that patients desire active participation in their care decisions and seek a foundational understanding of biomarker testing, often asking what biomarkers are, their importance, and if they are inheritable. Despite recognizing practical benefits like minimally invasive sampling and faster turnaround times, significant barriers to biomarker testing persist, particularly among underserved populations. There is also wide variability in patient understanding of liquid biopsy, with some interpreting it literally ...
