Pennsylvania Homeowners Face 20% Increase in Electric Bills Over Two Years
Pennsylvania residents are experiencing a significant rise in their electricity bills, with an average increase of 20% over the past two years. According to the state's Independent Fiscal Office, the typical monthly electric bill has risen from $213 in 2024 to $257 in 2026. This increase encompasses costs related to generation, transmission, distribution, and taxes. The report highlights a 12% rise in generation and transmission costs per kilowatt hour, as utility companies adjusted their 'price to compare' rates. Wholesale power prices have also surged, with a notable jump from $55.5 per megawatt hour in 2024 to $136.5 in the first quarter of 2026. These increases are attributed to factors such as higher fuel prices, transmission limitations, and increased demand from data centers.
