Shrey Parikh, a 14-year-old from San Bernardino, California, emerged as the champion of the 2026 Scripps National Spelling Bee. The competition concluded with a Spell-Off, a format introduced in 2021, where participants spell as many words as possible in 90 seconds. Shrey successfully spelled 32 words, surpassing runner-up Ishaan Gupta, who spelled 25 words. The winning word, 'bromocriptine,' is a polypeptide alkaloid used in medical treatments, including Parkinson's disease and Type 2 diabetes. Shrey received $52,500, the Scripps Cup, and other prizes. The event was held at the DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, DC, marking its return to the nation's capital after 15 years.
