Southcentral Alaska Utilities Face Potential Gas Shortage as Winter Approaches
As winter nears, utilities in Southcentral Alaska are expressing concerns over potential natural gas shortages. Homer Electric Association, reliant on Enstar's gas supply from Cook Inlet, is preparing for a worst-case scenario due to insufficient local gas production. Enstar's president, John Sims, indicated that if the upcoming winter mirrors last year's cold conditions, service curtailments might be necessary. This would prioritize gas supply to homes, schools, and hospitals, while industrial facilities and businesses could face cutoffs. Despite efforts to increase gas production, including drilling by Hilcorp and Furie, the supply remains inadequate. Enstar is considering importing gas to meet future demands, but this solution is years away.
