California Lawmakers Push for Ban on Nitrous Oxide Sales to Enhance Public Safety
California state legislators are advocating for the passage of several bills aimed at banning the sale of nitrous oxide, commonly known as 'laughing gas' or 'whip-its', due to its dangerous effects on public health and safety. The substance, which is legally sold at gas stations, liquor stores, and smoke shops, has been linked to car crashes, paralysis, nerve damage, and cognitive impairment among users. Local governments across California have recognized the need for stricter regulations, as emergency department visits related to nitrous oxide misuse have surged. Efforts to curb its sale include proposed legislation such as AB 2076, SB 1314, SB 758, and SB 936, which aim to close loopholes in nitrous oxide sales and strengthen age verification processes.
