Sentara Health's EHR Cloud Migration Enhances Efficiency and Innovation
Sentara Health, a healthcare system operating in Virginia, North Carolina, and Florida, has undertaken a significant migration of its electronic health records (EHR) from an on-premises data center to the cloud. This strategic move, initiated in 2018, was driven by the need to improve accessibility and leverage new technologies. Jeffrey Thomas, the Senior Vice President and CTO at Sentara Health, emphasized that the traditional on-premises EHR setup limited the organization's ability to utilize advanced technologies cost-effectively. Instead of a simple 'lift-and-shift' approach, which could perpetuate existing inefficiencies, Sentara opted for a comprehensive reengineering and redesigning process. This involved reducing and simplifying their systems, moving only about 550 of their 1,300 applications to the cloud. This transition not only facilitated new technological capabilities but also allowed Sentara to streamline operations and adopt better business practices.
