Winston-Salem State University Receives $750K Grant for Historic Founder's House Renovation

Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) has been awarded a $750,000 grant from the National Park Service. This funding is designated for the renovation of the Simon Green Atkins House, the historic home of the university's founder. Built in 1893, the house is situated in Columbia Heights, an early Black middle-class neighborhood in Winston-Salem. It is one of only three houses from this neighborhood listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the sole one still standing. Currently located on WSSU's campus, the house serves as the Office of Alumni Affairs. University officials emphasize the house's significance to both the school's history and the broader history of the Columbia Heights community. Renovation plans include essential upgrades such as roof replacement, HVAC system improvements, and repairs to address damage caused by weather. The project awaits approval from the WSSU Board of Trustees and the UNC Board of Governors.

Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem Managers Grapple with Climate Change Through Resist-Accept-Direct Framework

Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem Managers Grapple with Climate Change Through Resist-Accept-Direct Framework

Land managers in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE), encompassing federal, state, local, private, and Tribal lands, are increasingly utilizing the Resist-Accept-Direct (RAD) framework to address ecological transformations driven by climate change. A study involving interviews with federal agencies and a regional non-profit revealed that while a common goal of promoting a resilient landscape exists, current management actions predominantly align with 'resist' strategies, aiming to maintain existing ecological conditions. This is often due to institutional mandates and policy constraints. However, there is a growing openness to implementing a mix of 'resist,' 'accept' (allowing transformations with minimal intervention), and 'direct' (guiding ecosystems toward desired new states) actions. For instance, managers are resisting change in whitebark pine and sagebrush systems, while considering directing change in Douglas-fir forests. The study highlights significant disparities in the age of management plan...

Nolan Wells' Family and Attorney Ben Crump Renew Call for Federal Investigation into Death

Nolan Wells' Family and Attorney Ben Crump Renew Call for Federal Investigation into Death

The family of 18-year-old Nolan Wells, alongside civil rights attorney Ben Crump, is intensifying their demand for an independent federal investigation into Wells' death. Wells disappeared during a July 4 gathering on Horn Island, part of Gulf Islands National Seashore, and his body was found two days later. His friends, who returned to the mainland without him, stated he chose to stay behind, a claim disputed by his family. A Jackson County grand jury, after issuing 132 subpoenas and hearing from 43 witnesses, unanimously returned a 'no true bill,' finding no credible evidence of criminal conduct related to Wells' death. The grand jury's report indicated that the position, condition, location, and time of discovery of Wells' body were consistent with drowning. Both the state medical examiner and the family's independent pathologist left the cause and manner of death undetermined. Wells' mother, Christine Wonsley, expressed that the family has 'more questions and heartbreak than any answers,' particularly ...

Congresswoman Frederica Wilson Calls for Federal Investigation into Nolan Wells' Death

Congresswoman Frederica Wilson Calls for Federal Investigation into Nolan Wells' Death

Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson (D-Fla.) has publicly called for a "prompt and exhaustive" federal investigation into the death of 18-year-old Nolan Wells. Wells' mysterious death has garnered national attention, particularly after both a private autopsy, funded by former football player Colin Kaepernick, and the official state autopsy concluded his cause and manner of death were "undetermined." The state autopsy also noted evidence of injury on the back of Wells' head, though it could not determine how it occurred. This call for federal intervention follows a Mississippi grand jury's decision on September 21 to not bring charges in the case, despite inconsistencies in witness testimonies, suspicions of deleted text messages, and the fact that one of Wells' friends possessed his phone after his disappearance. Wells was found dead in July after an Independence Day trip to Horn Island with friends. His family has been actively pressing for answers regarding the circumstances of his death, urging federal ag...

The park was preceded by Great Smoky Mountains, Yellowstone, and Rocky Mountain national parks, with Acadia National Park completing the top five. KURU Footwear's ranking methodology considered three primary factors: annual visitation, the total number of hiking trails available, and the average user ratings of these trails. Visitation accounted for 34 points in the scoring system, while trail variety and user ratings each contributed 33 points. Yosemite is noted for having 298 hiking trails and an average user rating of 4.6. The data for this assessment was sourced from platforms like AllTrails and official National Park Service visitation statistics.
