Georgia's Inflation Reaches 5.9% in April, Highest in Two Years
Annual inflation in Georgia has surged to 5.9% in April, marking the highest level in two years, according to data from Geostat. This increase is primarily driven by a significant rise in transport costs, which went up by 10.3%, contributing 1.2 percentage points to the overall inflation rate. The cost of operating personal vehicles increased by 15.1%, and transport services rose by 9.2%, largely due to higher fuel prices. Additionally, food prices saw a sharp increase of 7.5% year-on-year, contributing 2.58 percentage points to inflation. Notable price hikes were observed in fish (21.3%), fruits and grapes (11.8%), meat (10.1%), and vegetables (9.3%). Housing and utility costs also rose by 6.5%, influenced by higher tariffs for electricity, gas, and heating introduced from April 1. Miscellaneous goods and services experienced a 9% increase, with personal items, insurance, and personal hygiene products seeing significant price rises.
