AI Boom and Data Centers Contribute to Rising Electric Bills Across the U.S.
Electric bills in the United States have increased by more than 20 percent in some states over the past year, with the expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) technology being a contributing factor. Consumer Reports highlights that the growth of data centers, which are essential for powering AI tools and cloud services, is a significant driver of this increase. These data centers require substantial amounts of electricity, sometimes as much as a small city, putting additional pressure on the aging electric grid. The rapid expansion of data centers, spurred by the introduction of AI technologies like ChatGPT, has led to nearly a thousand hyperscale data centers being planned or under construction. This expansion is particularly impactful in areas with large clusters of data centers, such as Northern Virginia, where residents have experienced significant increases in their electric bills.
