Martha's Vineyard Hospital Initiates Pioneering Alpha-Gal Syndrome Study
Martha's Vineyard Hospital (MVH), a member of Mass General Brigham, has enrolled its first participant in a first-of-its-kind study aimed at understanding alpha-gal syndrome. This tick-borne condition causes an allergy to mammalian products such as meat and dairy. The study plans to recruit 300 individuals who reside on Martha's Vineyard for more than three months annually and have experienced a lone star tick bite or larvae exposure within seven days prior to testing. Participants must be at least 15 years old, with those under 18 requiring written informed consent from a parent or legal guardian. The research seeks to identify why some individuals develop the syndrome after a tick bite while others do not, and what biological or demographic factors influence risk. The hospital has also seen a significant increase in alpha-gal testing and positive results in recent years, leading to the establishment of a new alpha-gal research center in West Tisbury.
