Dysautonomia Presents Cardiac-Like Symptoms Despite Normal Heart Structure
Dysautonomia, a condition involving the malfunction of the autonomic nervous system, can produce prominent symptoms that mimic heart conditions, such as a racing heart, palpitations, and fluctuating blood pressure. Despite these cardiac-like manifestations, dysautonomia is distinct from structural heart disease, meaning the heart itself may be anatomically normal. The autonomic nervous system regulates involuntary bodily functions, including heart rate, blood pressure, and vascular tone. When this regulation is disrupted, patients can experience symptoms like exercise intolerance, chest discomfort, and lightheadedness, often leading them to seek evaluation from cardiologists.
