French Authorities Arrest Russian Captain Amid Shadow Fleet Tanker Investigation
French prosecutors have detained the captain of the tanker Tagor, a vessel suspected of operating under a false flag, as part of an ongoing investigation. The tanker, originating from Murmansk, Russia, was intercepted by the French Navy off the Atlantic coast on May 31. Authorities directed the vessel to a bay near Brest, France, after initial investigations confirmed suspicions of false registration. The captain faces potential charges that could result in a year-long prison sentence and a fine of up to $174,000. The French prosecutor, Stephane Kellenberger, stated that efforts are underway to identify the tanker's owner, who may face similar penalties. The Tagor is believed to be linked to a network associated with Iran, and the vessel is under sanctions from the U.S., UK, and EU.
