West Texas Artist Raul Ruiz Honored with Inaugural Arte Y Cultura Impact Award
West Texas artist Raul Ruiz has been awarded the first Arte Y Cultura impact award by the San Angelo Hispanic Heritage Museum. Ruiz expressed gratitude for the recognition, stating it brought him great joy. His extensive body of work is displayed across West Texas and throughout the United States, including a notable 6-foot bronze airman statue titled 'Heros on the Concho' for the World War II memorial, located near the convention center. Ruiz has maintained his own Art Studio and Gallery in Downtown San Angelo since the mid-1980s. He continues to pursue his artistic passion, emphasizing a mindset of continuous learning and improvement, often remarking that his 'next piece is my best piece.' He also shared insights into his sculpture-making process, likening it to building a house, where meticulous framework and anatomical correctness are established before the actual sculpting begins, often involving numerous sketches and preparatory work on the 'skeleton.'
