Civil Society Groups Urge Meta to Halt Facial Recognition Feature on Smart Glasses
A coalition of over 70 civil liberties, domestic violence, reproductive rights, LGBTQ+, labor, and immigrant advocacy organizations is urging Meta to abandon its plans to deploy facial recognition technology on its Ray-Ban and Oakley smart glasses. The feature, known internally as 'Name Tag,' would allow wearers to identify strangers in public using artificial intelligence. The coalition, which includes the ACLU and the Electronic Privacy Information Center, argues that this technology could be exploited by stalkers, abusers, and federal agents, posing significant privacy risks. They have called on Meta to scrap the feature entirely, citing concerns that bystanders cannot meaningfully consent to being identified. Meta has been asked to disclose any instances of its wearables being used in stalking or harassment cases and to consult privacy experts before integrating biometric identification into consumer devices.
