Somerville Firefighter Charged in $14,000 World Cup Ticket Scam
Robert Whelan, a firefighter from Somerville, Massachusetts, is facing legal charges for allegedly orchestrating a scam involving FIFA World Cup tickets. According to the Middlesex District Attorney, Whelan used his status as a Patriots season ticket holder to falsely promise access to World Cup tickets, collecting $14,000 from victims. He reportedly created fake email confirmations to convince victims of the legitimacy of the tickets. When pressured for refunds, Whelan allegedly fabricated a story about withdrawing $157,000 from his pension fund to repay the victims, even going so far as to create a fake email from the pension board president to support his claim. Whelan is charged with larceny over $250 by false pretense, forgery, and uttering a false instrument. He is scheduled to appear in Somerville District Court on Monday.
