Quebec Parental Insurance Plan Enhances Support for Families and Gender Equality
The Quebec Parental Insurance Plan (QPIP), introduced in 2006, aims to provide more assistance to low-income families and promote gender equality by encouraging maternal participation in the labor force and paternal involvement in childcare. The plan replaced the federal Employment Insurance program for parental leave benefits in Quebec, lowering eligibility requirements and offering two benefit options. The QPIP's objectives are to reduce inequalities and support family functioning and healthy child development, particularly focusing on diverse populations such as low-income families, precariously employed families, immigrant and racialized groups, LGBTQ+ parents, single-parent and blended families, and families formed through adoption or surrogacy.
