Alameda County Considers Legal Challenge to New State Law on Nonprofit Grant Rules
Alameda County is contemplating a legal challenge against Senate Bill 1193, a new state law authored by State Senator Aisha Wahab and signed by Governor Gavin Newsom on August 27. This legislation, set to take effect in January, mandates stricter rules for how the county allocates millions of dollars in grants to nonprofit organizations. Specifically, the bill requires the county to specify a public purpose for all awarded funds, prohibits awards without such a purpose, and demands public disclosure of the amount and intent of future grants.
