Texas Land Commissioner Orders Federal Contractors to Halt Unauthorized Land Activity
Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham has issued a cease and desist order to Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Barnard Construction after discovering unauthorized land clearing on state property. The activity, which involved clearing over a mile of state land, was conducted without the necessary written consent from the Texas General Land Office (GLO). Commissioner Buckingham emphasized the importance of adhering to established protocols to protect Texas sovereignty and maintain the value of state lands. The unauthorized activity disrupted significant grazing acreage, impacting the lease value and future revenue generation for Texas schoolchildren. The lessee, Trans Pecos Ice LLC, has been notified of their breach of the lease agreement and instructed to prevent further disturbances. The GLO is demanding remediation of the damaged land and has reserved legal remedies to address the unauthorized use.
