U.S. Metros with High AI Exposure Face Significant Workforce Reshaping
A new analysis by Indeed Hiring Lab has ranked 386 U.S. metropolitan areas based on their exposure to generative AI (GenAI), indicating where AI is most likely to reshape work. The study, published in August, found that metros with economies heavily reliant on software and data work are the most exposed. San Jose, California, scored highest with 59, followed by Seattle (57), Washington, D.C. (54), San Francisco (53), and Austin, Texas (52). These areas are characterized by a high concentration of software development jobs, which are among the occupations most susceptible to GenAI transformation. Conversely, metros with a significant share of jobs in manufacturing, healthcare, and retail, such as Homosassa Springs, Florida, and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, scored lowest, suggesting they are furthest from GenAI's immediate impact.
