Mayor Mamdani Appoints Diverse Committee to Select New York Judges Amid Criticism
Mayor Zohran Mamdani has appointed a diverse group of attorneys, including those from Proskauer Rose and Columbia Law School, to a committee responsible for selecting judges for New York City courts. This move comes as Mamdani seeks to diversify the legal backgrounds of city judges, traditionally dominated by former prosecutors and court clerks. The committee, chaired by Ali Najmi, will vet and recommend candidates for criminal, family, and civil courts. The appointments aim to address growing judicial vacancies and case backlogs, which have drawn criticism from the New York County Lawyers Association and media outlets. The committee includes notable figures such as Joseph Drayton, Danielle Jones, Martin LaFalce, Amber Baylor, Dennis Fan, and Thomas Principe.
