Icebreaking Challenges Disrupt Great Lakes Shipping Season
Shipping operations on the Great Lakes faced significant disruptions during the 2025-2026 winter season due to inadequate icebreaking capabilities. U.S.-flagged vessels lost approximately 1,953 hours, equivalent to 82 ship days, as icebreakers struggled to clear critical waterways. The U.S. Coast Guard's aging fleet, including the 140-foot icebreaking tugs and the CGC MACKINAW, experienced frequent mechanical failures, leaving many vessels stranded. The ice season extended into April, with warmer temperatures in March melting ice on southern lakes, allowing limited resources to focus on northern regions. Despite these efforts, delays persisted, particularly in the St. Marys River, a vital connection between Lake Superior and the lower lakes.
