New York Attorney General Letitia James has issued a warning about an increase in fraudulent investment schemes using deepfake technology on Meta platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. These scams often involve 'pump and dump' schemes, where scammers lure victims into investing in cryptocurrencies or low-priced stocks, only to sell off their shares at inflated prices, leaving victims with losses. The scams exploit the names of trusted financial figures and celebrities to deceive investors. The Attorney General's office has provided tips for New Yorkers to identify and report these scams, emphasizing the importance of skepticism towards social media investment ads.
